COMMON COCKROACHES IN NJ, PA, MD & DE
Cockroaches? No thank you! Cockroaches are nasty and sometimes very large insects that are scary looking and dangerous as they scurry or fly around your yard and through your home. They can carry and transmit some terrible diseases and bacteria that can make you and your family very sick. They can also cause asthma problems for many people, especially kids. The roaches shed their skins and their feces dry out and become airborne, triggering an asthma attack.
Why Cockroaches Are in Your Home
So, why are they in your house? They are looking for food and water. They get in through cracks, crevices, gaps, and holes in your walls or foundation. They can also be carried in on food purchased at the market or on packages or boxes brought into your home. Common roaches in NJ, PA, MD and DE are the American, German, Oriental, brown-banded, and smoky brown cockroaches. Each type is a bit different from the other in regards to preferred climate, food, and amount of water required.
The American roaches are dark reddish-brown with a yellow 8 shape on the back of their heads. They can be up to 2 inches long (these are some very big cockroaches). They live on trees, in flowerbeds, underneath mulch, and in sewers (where they pick up bacteria and disease). They come into your home covered in sewerage looking for food and water.
The German roaches are light brown to tan with 2 horizontal black stripes behind their heads. They are generally found inside kitchen and bathroom areas where it is warm and moist.
The Oriental roaches are black, shiny, and give off a terrible odor. They can be as large as 1 inch long, feed on decaying garbage, and need plenty of water to survive.
The brown-banded roaches are brown with a band and are a bit smaller than the rest, up to 1/2 inch long. They like an environment that is dry and extremely warm. They like to gather around appliances that give off heat and in warm attics.
The smoky-brown roaches are mahogany-black, are good fliers, and will eat most anything. They live in humid, dark, and warm places that have water readily available.
