MOSQUITO DISEASES

Written by Viking Pest Control | April 15, 2020

Mosquitoes are infamous for their annoying ability to ruin any outdoor leisure time. Yet, it is also important to remember that these insects can present a significant health hazard to you and your family. Like other insects, mosquitos are a host for diseases harmful to humans.

Here at Viking Pest Control, we’ve put together a list of mosquito diseases in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland that you should look out for.

Mosquito Diseases

Here are some of the more common NJ, PA, MD, and DE mosquito diseases that may pose a risk to you:

Zika Virus

Many cases of Zika virus disease go unreported, likely due to the fact that its symptoms often only last about a week and are minor. However, a major danger is that Zika virus can lead to severe birth defects, so pregnant women are often most at risk.

Symptoms of Zika virus include fever, rashes, joint pain, and conjunctivitis.

Malaria

Possibly the most well known of all mosquito-borne diseases, malaria is responsible for millions of deaths around the world. While it’s been largely eliminated in countries with temperate climates, cases are still reported periodically in both Europe and the US.

Symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, chills, and vomiting.

Encephalitis

This disease causes inflammation in the brain and can vary from very mild to life-threatening. Those who survive severe cases often suffer permanent damage to their nervous systems.

Symptoms of encephalitis include fever, fatigue, vomiting, drowsiness, visual sensitivity to light, and other problems.

Mosquito Disease Treatment and Prevention

Most mosquito-borne diseases have no specific treatments. If you suspect that you have a mosquito-borne infection, get plenty of fluids and rest. Make sure to also visit your doctor. In order to avoid contracting mosquito-borne diseases, wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, and socks during peak mosquito activity from dusk till dawn. Perhaps, the easiest precaution, remember to use an EPA registered repellant on exposed skin before going outside during mosquito season.
